সাবের আহমদ আসগারী ১৯৬৯ সালের গণআন্দোলনে সর্বদলীয় ছাত্র সংগ্রাম পরিষদের অন্যতম সমন্বয়ক ছিলেন এবং অবিভক্ত চট্টগ্রাম জেলা ছাত্রলীগের সাধারণ সম্পাদকের দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। ১৯৭১ সালের মুক্তিযুদ্ধে তিনি সরাসরি অংশ গ্রহণ করেন এবং শেখ ফজলুল হক মনির নেতৃত্বে মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের প্রশিক্ষণ প্রদান করেন। চট্টগ্রামের আরেক মুক্তিযোদ্ধা সাংবাদিক নাসিরুদ্দিন চৌধুরী জানান, মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চূড়ান্ত পর্যায়ে সাবের আহমদ আসগারী চট্টগ্রামের সাত সদস্যের আঞ্চলিক কমান্ডের একজন কমান্ডার হিসেবে মিরসরাই, সীতাকুন্ড ও সন্দ্বীপের দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। তিনি দীর্ঘদিন সাপ্তাহিক হলিডে পত্রিকার চট্টগ্রাম ব্যুরো প্রধানের দায়িত্ব পালন করেন।
