ক্যাথলিক খ্রিস্টানদের প্রধান ধর্মগুরু পোপ ফ্রান্সিস মারা গেছেন। সোমবার (২১ এপ্রিল) তিনি মারা যান বলে নিশ্চিত করেছে ভ্যাটিকান। খবর বিবিসির।
ভ্যাটিক্যানের একটি ভিডিও বার্তায় তার মৃত্যুর কথা জানানো হয়েছে। বলা হয়েছে, স্থানীয় সময় সোমবার (২১ এপ্রিল) সকাল ৭টা ৩৫ মিনিটে তার বাসভবন কাসা সান্টা মার্টায় শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেছেন তিনি। দীর্ঘদিন ধরেই শারীরিক সমস্যায় ভুগছিলেন রোমান ক্যাথলিক গির্জার প্রধান। মৃত্যুকালে তার বয়স হয়েছিল ৮৮ বছর।
বিবিসি বলছে, ইস্টার উদযাপনের পরদিনই মারা গেলেন এই ধর্মগুরু। আগের দিন রোববারই তিনি মার্কিন ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট জেডি ভ্যান্সের সঙ্গে দেখা করেছিলেন।
ভ্যাটিক্যানের টেলিভিশন চ্যানেলে কার্ডিনাল কেভিন ফারেল বলেন, গভীর দুঃখের সঙ্গে আমাকে আমাদের পবিত্র ফাদার ফ্রান্সিসের মৃত্যুর কথা ঘোষণা করতে হচ্ছে।
বিবিসির প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়, তিনি ছিলেন ৭৪ সালের পর প্রথম নন-ইউরোপিয়ান পোপ। ৭৪১ সালে সিরিয়ান বংশোদ্ভূত তৃতীয় গ্রেগরির মৃত্যুর পর রোমে আর কোনো নন-ইউরোপিয় পোপ আসেননি। তিনি ক্যাথলিক গির্জায় সংস্কার কখনো বন্ধ করেননি। তারপরও তিনি সকলের কাছে জনপ্রিয় ছিলেন।
পোপ ফ্রান্সিস দীর্ঘদিন ধরে অসুস্থতায় ভুগছিলেন। দুটি ফুসফুসে নিউমোনিয়ায় পাঁচ সপ্তাহ হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসা নেয়ার পর তিনি গত ২৩ মার্চ ভ্যাটিকানে ফিরে আসেন। পোপ হিসেবে দায়িত্ব নেয়ার ১২ বছর পর দীর্ঘ সময় হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসাধীন ছিলেন তিনি।
চিকিৎসকরা প্রথমে একটি জটিল ব্যাকটেরিয়া, ভাইরাস ও ফাঙ্গাল শ্বাসনালীর সংক্রমণ শনাক্ত করেন। পরবর্তীতে যা দুটি ফুসফুসেই নিউমোনিয়ায় রূপ নেয়। রক্তপরীক্ষায় রক্তশূন্যতা, কম প্লেটলেট এবং কিডনি অকার্যকারিতার প্রাথমিক লক্ষণগুলো ধরা পড়ে।
যুবক বয়সে তার একটি ফুসফুসের অংশ অপারেশন করে বাদ দেয়া হয়েছিল। গত ১৪ ফেব্রুয়ারি ব্রঙ্কাইটিসের তীব্র উপসর্গ নিয়ে তিনি রোমের জেমেলি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় হাসপাতালে ভর্তি হয়েছিলেন।
২০১৩ সালের ১৩ মার্চ পোপ নির্বাচিত হন জর্জ মারিও বার্গোগ্লিও। পোপ হিসেবে নির্বাচিত হবার পর নাম পরিবর্তন করে রাখেন ‘ফ্রান্সিস’। আর্জেন্টিনার এই ধর্মযাজক দরিদ্রদের প্রতি সহমর্মিতার জন্য বেশ পরিচিত ছিলেন।
জাঁকজমকপূর্ণ জীবন খুবই অপছন্দ ছিল পোপ ফ্রান্সিসের। এমনকি পূর্বসূরীদের ব্যবহৃত অ্যাপোস্টলিক প্রাসাদের অলংকৃত বাসস্থানে কখনোই বাস করেননি তিনি।
তিনি এমন একটি গির্জার দায়িত্ব গ্রহণ করেছিলেন যা শিশুদের যৌন নির্যাতন কেলেঙ্কারির জন্য বেশ সমালোচিত ছিল। সেই সাথে ভ্যাটিকানের আমলাতান্ত্রিক কোন্দলে জর্জরিত ছিল। গির্জায় শৃঙ্খলা ফিরিয়ে আনার একটি স্পষ্ট ম্যান্ডেট নিয়েই তিনি পোপ নির্বাচিত হন।
